DeSoto County

DeSoto County preserves a side of Florida that most visitors never see — a landscape of cattle ranches, oak hammocks, and a pace of life rooted in the state's pioneer heritage. With a population of approximately 37,000, DeSoto County is one of the smallest and most rural counties in Southwest Florida. The county seat is Arcadia, a town that has earned a reputation far beyond its size.

Arcadia is known as the Antiques Capital of Florida. The downtown historic district, centered on West Oak Street, is lined with antique shops, vintage stores, and specialty dealers that attract collectors from across the state and beyond. Antique fairs held throughout the year bring thousands of visitors to the small downtown.

The All-Florida Championship Rodeo, held each year on the Fourth of July weekend and in March, is one of the oldest and most prestigious rodeos in the state. Bull riding, barrel racing, and calf roping are highlights of the multi-day event.

The Peace River flows through DeSoto County and offers some of the best fossil hunting in Florida. Paddlers regularly find fossilized shark teeth, bone fragments, and other prehistoric remains dating back millions of years. Outfitters in Arcadia offer canoe and kayak rentals for fossil-hunting expeditions.

DeSoto County's economy is based on agriculture (citrus, cattle, sod farming) and a growing service sector. The county offers some of the most affordable housing in the Southwest Florida region, making it attractive to families and retirees seeking rural living within reach of coastal amenities. Arcadia is roughly 45 minutes from both Punta Gorda and Sarasota, providing access to larger job markets and shopping.

Nocatee, a small community south of Arcadia, adds to the county's rural character. The area is popular with equestrian enthusiasts and those seeking acreage properties.
